Human Rights

The Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, desirous of ending armed conflicts to make internal peace in order to build a peaceful, developed nation, has invited national race armed groups wishing to solve armed conflicts to peace talks.

In order to maintain law and order and to protect the life and property of the people, and development projects in Kachin State, the Tatmadaw has been taking security measures as KIO/ KIA continues to commit destructive acts of blowing up development projects, roads and bridges, taking hostages and killing innocent civilians. The Tatmadaw has been conducting its duties under strict rule of law and military code of conduct while exercising total restraint in its actions.

Recently there were some foreign media reports alleging Myanma Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces) of committing human rights violations and atrocities against civilians, particularly women in the armed conflict areas.

The Tatmadaw was born out of historical necessity of the nation. As it is made up of the sons of all national races, the Tatmadaw has always been protecting and safeguarding the life and property of the people in addition to its primary duty of safeguarding the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity of the state.

The Tatmadaw is an institution built on the solid foundation of strict discipline and strong patriotism. It is bound by military and civil laws. The military code of conduct has been strictly enforced within the entire armed forces.

Any serviceman who violates the existing laws and military code of conduct will be dealt with severely. Anyone can file complaint if there is an evidence of a Tatmadaw serviceman committing atrocities. But, there was no complaint filed against any Tatmadaw servicemen concerning violation of human rights and committing atrocities against civilian population in areas where the military is conducting security activities or any part of the country.

These allegations emanate from fabricated reports by anti-government groups inside and outside the country in collusion with some foreign media with an aim to tarnishing the image of the government of Myanmar and the Tatmadaw. These accusations are groundless and far from the truth. Therefore, we categorically reject these allegations.

The Tatmadaw while upholding our Three National Causes will continue to fulfill the noble task of safeguarding the life and property of the people.
